Operation steps:
1. Delete unnecessary objects in photos
Step 1
Open our grass material in PS, and now we find a fluffy little bunny on the grass, so we need to delete it to make room for the fireflies.
But first, let’s flip the image. Go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal. Shortcut keysctrl+T and then right-click to flip horizontally.
Step 2
Now crop the photo for a tighter composition. Select the Crop Tool (c) and crop the image as shown below. Feel free to resize the overall image to something similar to this one (2500 x 1932 pixels) for the final result. However, the actual situation determines the size according to the quality of your own materials.
Step 3
Let’s get the rabbit out of the way!
Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool (m) and select some grass from the left side. Copy and paste onto a new layer and rename it bunny. Turn the grass over. Go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal. Then put it on the rabbit. Add the layer Mask to this layer. Use the Soft Round Brush (b) (100% Opacity, 0% Hardness) to paint out the edges of the square, softening it and fitting it into the environment.
Tip: You can choose a larger area of grass to cover the rabbit. Then it is necessary to achieve a perfect fit with the grass, so that it cannot be seen as a collage at a glance!
2. Add the glass jar to the scene
Step 1
Now let’s work on the glass jar. We need to cut it out of the white background first in order to insert it into the composition.
Open your glass jar footage in photoshop. Double-click the background layer to make it a normal layer. Use the Magic Wand Tool (w) to select the white background. Then hit the delete key to delete it completely. (Here I recommend using the pen tool to cut out the image)
Step 2
Place the extracted jar on top of the rabbit layer. Use the Free Transform Tool (Control-T) to rotate the jar at a slight angle. After all, it is sitting on the grass, so it will be a little closer to the center.
If you are using a jar material similar to this, then you will notice that the inside is white, just like the background. To make it more like an actual glass bottle, we need to do the following steps. First, select the jar layer and hold control-i to invert it. This will make it mostly black.
Step 3
Create a new group and place the jar layer inside it. Set the jar’s layer blending mode to “Screen” and hold down Ctrl+J to make multiple copies, three copies in total. (We have to invert the jar first so we can apply an effect that makes it more transparent.)
Now, select all the layers in the group and right-click to merge them together. This will make the jar appear black again, so make sure to set the layer blending mode back to Screen. Of course you can merge or convert smart objects.
Keep working on the jars. Next, add a layer mask. Use the Hard Round Brush (B) (100% Opacity, 100% Hardness) to paint black on the layer mask to remove the white reflection. Then hold ctrl-j and copy this layer, setting the copy’s opacity to 50%.
Now we have a clean glass bottle that looks super realistic!
Step 5
The jars were contrast and color corrected to enhance authenticity. Create a new layer above the jar group. Right-click to set this layer as the group’s clipping mask. Before setting the layer blending mode to Color Burn, fill the layer with the Paint Bucket Tool (g) #b6a8b8.
Step 6
Now apply the shadow on the jar. This step will help remove harsh white edges. Create a new layer above the pink fill and set it to “Clipping Mask”. Use a Soft Round Brush (B) (70-90% Opacity, 0% Hardness) to paint the edges of the glass with the brown #262019 shadow. Continue adding more shade to the bottom of the jar. You can layer colors. You can use the Eraser Tool (e) to remove some of the shadow anytime you feel something is wrong. Then set the layer blending mode to “Multiply”.
Paint the shadow around the can, using the Eraser Tool (e) if it becomes too heavy.
Step 7
We’ve finished our first jar! Let’s add another one. To do this, select all the layers of the first jar (including shadow and fill) and hold CTRl+j to duplicate them. Now resize the second jar. While all layers are still selected, hold down ctrl+t to make them smaller. The ones at the back will become very small, adjust the shadow and position as needed.
Here are the results so far.
3. Add fireflies
Step 1
Now that our jar is in place, we can start adding fireflies. Remember, these are not real fireflies. I can’t find their flying poses, so we’ll just combine them ourselves. Then it needs to be cut out. (Of course, if you feel that the material is not in the material, you can use Google to search for pictures on the Internet.)
Step 2
Copy and paste the first fly below the two jar groups. Free Transform (control-t) resize the fly to make it smaller. Place the fly above the first jar. The lighting is going to be bright on the fly, so add a new Curves adjustment layer above it and set it to “Clipping Mask”. Adjust the curves for the RGB, green and blue channels as shown below.
Step 3
With the merged layers selected, hold control-j to create more copies of the lit fly! You should make about 10 copies in total. Adjust the size and position of each flying posture to make the scene more dynamic. Be sure to have a few sitting on top of the jars, or just flying around on top of them. (You can also put it behind the jar, don’t put it all in the front)
Step 4
Add the final fly. If you want, you can use the same angle or try a new one. Copy the fly and paste it on top of the other layers. Go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to flip it. The fly will fly in from the right. So resize it bigger than the others. Then position it at a downward angle to get a sense of depth of field.
Step 5
To enhance the depth of field, blur the fly on the right. Select the layer and go to “Filter” Gaussian Blur, add a radius of 25 px.
Step 6
Now that all the flies are in place, we can cover the bottom of the jar with grass so that they blend perfectly into the ground. Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (m) to select the grass underneath the jar. Copy and paste two copies of the grass onto two new layers. Place each piece of grass on the bottom of the jar and merge the layers together.
Work on the grass details! Add a layer mask and use the Soft Round Brush (B) to block out the harsh hard edges.
4. Create a firefly atmosphere
To get to the final stage of this manipulation, we still need to paint the firefly with a bright yellow glow. Then, we’ll make more shadow and light adjustments throughout the composition.
Step 1
This layer will add a series of stars to the scene. Set the layer blending mode to Screen and the Opacity to 87%. Use a simple layer mask to adjust the intensity. (You need to find the materials yourself, or you can draw some stars by yourself)
Step 2
To change the scene color scheme from day to night, use a few adjustment layers. Add a new Color Find adjustment layer. Set 3dlut files to nighttime. Then set the layer blending mode to Hard Light and the opacity to 73%. (Nightfrom Day.CUBE)
Step 3
Next, add a new adjustment layer of Gradient Map. Set the colors from Crimson #270209 to Red #d90f31, then set the layer blending mode to Linear Dodge . Lower the opacity to 30%.
Continue to adjust�Color. Add another new Color Find adjustment layer. Set the 3dlut file to candelity.cube and opacity to 71%. Then add another new Gradient adjustment layer. Set the colors to the Blue, Yellow, and Pink presets, then lower the Opacity to 30% and change the Layer Blending Mode to Hue.
Step 5
We can now experiment with adding more shadows. Let’s create a slight vignette effect to draw more attention to the jar and fireflies. Create a new layer with the layer mode “Multiply”. Use a Soft Round Brush (70% Opacity, 0% Hardness) to paint #403a2c brown around the edges of the composition. The final effect is as shown below.
Step 6
Light up the scene with some light! Create a new layer above the rest of the layers. Use a soft round brush (0% Hardness, 70% Opacity) to paint yellow #b8b660 on the end of each fly.
Then create another new layer above the previous layer and set it to Overlay. Then paint some #f7cb57 color on the flies and grass, adjusting the layer opacity as needed. You can now see the jars and grass glowing. (This step involves painting two layers, one for the glow of fireflies and one for ambient light)
Step 7
Let’s make some more color adjustments. Start by creating a new adjustment layer with a selectable color. Adjust the values for red, yellow, neutral, white, and black to the following values.
Then create a new adjustment layer of color balance. Set the values for Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights to the following.
That’s the result. We added more warmth and color intensity contrast.
Step 8
To boost the color even further, create two New Layers and set both to Overlay. Use the Paint Bucket Tool (g) to fill the first layer with #2afbd1. Adjust the opacity to 15%. Then fill the second layer with yellow #fbae2a. Set Opacity to 40%. The result is this.
Step 9
Use a hard round paintbrush to paint yellow #dcc95e highlights on the grass around the glass jar. This manipulation will help us show the details, but of course you can use it as you wish!
